The New Album My Ummah
Islamic Art, whether in the form of calligraphy, tiles, or music is all inspired by divine love and beauty. Music is a gift from God and is a tool which can be used but also (as it often is) misused. Indeed, nearly all Muslim countries have a rich history of Islamic spiritual music, each with its distinctive sound and flavour. Unfortunately, due to many reasons,this heritage has long been in decline. It is my sincere wish that this humble album be one of the many artistic endeavours being undertaken to shape a new British-Muslim or Western-Muslim culture. I also felt obliged and motivated to contribute through this album to the positive efforts already being undertaken by the Muslim community to show the real face of Islam as understood by the majority of Muslims which is one of peace and tolerance. Mesut Kurtis was born in July 1981 in the Macedonian capital of Skopje. He comes from a scholarly and religious family of Turkish origin. He came to the UK at a young age to pursue his studies.
Mesut showed a strong interest in Islamic nasheeds from a very young age. His beautiful, powerful, and passionate voice was noticed very early on, leading him to join several nasheed groups in Macedonia that performed locally, and also made several international visits including performances in Turkey and neighbouring places. Mesut is also a gifted multi-linguist, being fluent in five languages, and this is wonderfully portrayed in his first nasheed album: Salawat, which features songs that beautifully and seamlessly combine Arabic, Turkish, and English. Native Deen's Muslim Rap
"My intentions cannot bring the reward, when they're out of line. So I pray to Allah to help me, to do everything for him only." Known as Muslim rap, this new musical phenomenon strikes a chord especially with African-Americans who make up about a third of all Muslims in the United States. The group behind the sound is Native Deen, three black men in the Washington, D.C., area who grew up as devout Muslims and want to use their talents to inspire other young people to keep the faith amid the pressures and temptations of modern life. All three -- Joshua Salaam, 28, Naeem Muhammad, and Abdul-Malik Ahmad, both 26 -- are married and fathers of young children. When not making music, Salaam manages the civil rights division of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Muhammad works for an information technology company, and Ahmad designs web sites and teaches martial arts.
As Native Deen, they perform at Islamic conferences, fundraisers, weddings, and holiday gatherings - any place, they say, "where wholesome Islamic entertainment is needed." They shun clubs, bars, and discos, or any venue where Islamic prohibitions against alcohol, dancing, and many forms of music are violated. Most of their songs deal with growing up Muslim in America, remembering to make morning prayers and practice the faith without getting too caught up in material possessions and "the TV shows and the music videos." A few numbers simply exhort listeners to avoid drugs, or sex, or cheating in school with no specific mention of religion. The group is careful to craft lyrics acceptable even to the most sensitive parental ear. "We make sure we don't put stuff in our songs that we don't want a four-year-old to repeat," says group leader Salaam. "Our music is something that parents and children can enjoy together. In fact, the parents encourage the kids to listen."
Because many Muslims believe that the teachings of the prophet Muhammad forbid the playing of most musical instruments, Native Deen uses only traditional drums in its live performances. Their tapes and CDs include a wider variety of percussion instruments, but a message at the beginning assures listeners that they will hear no wind or string instruments, which are considered especially taboo. The three musicians formed Native Deen in 2000 after years of performing together and separately at Muslim Youth of North America (MYNA) camps and other Islamic events. They and other artists recorded a series of tapes, called MYNA-RAPS, sales of which help support Muslim youth activities. "When we started traveling and performing together regularly, we decided, Let's call ourselves something," Salaam says. "Deen means religion or way of life in Arabic, so we picked the name Native Deen to signify the religion that's naturally in you." Combining rap with Muslim themes wasn't a conscious decision, Salaam says. "Growing up Muslim and black in America, those were our experiences. That's naturally what came off our lips." Word of mouth has been sufficient to land the young musicians gigs at Islamic events in California, Texas, and Illinois -- even an invitation to the United Kingdom, which they had to turn down because of a previous commitment. They attracted a following in Malaysia after a Malaysian television crew visiting the United States did a feature on them. In the past few months, they've achieved a new measure of fame thanks to a radio show, "On The Scene with Native Deen," that airs every Friday evening on a local Islamic radio station and is broadcast worldwide via the Islamic Broadcasting Network (IBN) Web site. The program, a combination of music, patter, and live discussion, has been "very successful in attracting the younger crowd," mainly high school and college students, says IBN's acting program director Sohaib Elsayed. The performers "convey personality, they're engaging," he says. "They take the day-to-day issues of growing up Muslim in America and put them in a more humorous light." The feedback the group gets from young fans is especially gratifying," Salaam says. "People come up and tell us how a song helped them get through ninth grade or inspired them to do different things by reminding them of their faith and that God is there -- and in a hip way." With Native Deen, Muslims in the United States also "feel like they have something of their own," he adds. "They say now we can have entertainment at our events, and it doesn't have to be in Arabic.  DEEN YOU KNOW is the debut album from the dynamic group Native Deen. Previously recording under the name MYNA Raps, Native Deen have come a long way and have recorded an album which is testimony to that fact. With 11 songs on this debut album, each with its’ own social and moral message, DEEN YOU KNOW is an album that shares the message of Islam in a contemporary style, the style of Native Deen.

Native Deen is Joshua Salaam, Abdul Malik Ahmad and Naeem Muhammad who were born and raised in America with Islam as their faith. This trio, all with hugely contrasting characters but with a common goal, are a truly dynamic, fully energized hip hop nasheed group to watch, listen and admire. Joshua Salaam was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1973. His family moved to the Mid-West where he was raised in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. He began making raps at the age of 10 and at the age of 12 he started rapping to entertain the youth at MYNA (Muslim Youth of North America) camps as a member of MSU (Muslim Steppin' Up). Later he became part of a group called Sonz of the Crescent whose first release was called What's the Word. As a result of getting married and moving to the East Coast, Joshua was able to be on the fifth production of MYNA Raps. Joshua served in the United States Air Force for 4 years as a Security Police Officer. He now has his degree in Criminal Justice and is active in Community work. He continues writing songs and raps hoping that Muslims and non-Muslims can learn from them and enjoy. Abdul-Malik was born in Connecticut in 1975 but spent most of his life in the Washington, DC area. He was home-schooled by his parents until 12th grade. After finishing high school, he attended Georgetown University. During this period, Abdul-Malik was able to visit the Middle East and become fluent in the Arabic language. Abdul-Malik now resides in Virginia with his wife Rahima and baby daughter Sakina. He works as a web developer and graphic designer running his own company Kufic Graphics. Naeem Muhammad was born Muslim on June 25, 1975, grew up in the inner city of Baltimore, MD where he currently lives with his wife and three kids. He graduated from the Islamic Community School of Baltimore, after which he attended Towson State University. He has been involved with Muslim youth work since he was 13, working with various organizations such as Muslim Youth of North America, Muslim Youth Council of D.C., and the Muslim Kids Club of Baltimore.

Zain was born in 1974 in Pretoria, South Africa where he started singing from a young age, though entertaining family and friends was as far as he went. In 1994, Zain entered a singing competition on a local radio station. From thousands of entries he won the competition. This success led to his first album 'A Way of Life' (1994). It soon became a rousing success amongst the South African Muslim community. Thus came 'Praise to the Prophet (saw)' (1996), followed at yearly intervals by 'Fortunate is He' (1997) and 'The Journey' (1998). All proved extremely popular and began to filter abroad. And so it was that Yusuf came across one of Zain's albums and invited him to London to work with him. The result was 'A is for Allah' (2000), a double album, primarily spoken word, which featured Zain singing 7 of the 8 songs. Later that year, two compilation albums 'Children of Heaven' and 'Towards the Light', featuring re-mixed songs, were released by Jamal Records. In 2001 he released 'Faith' with a guest appearance from his friend Dawud Wharnsby-Ali. Zain later went on to release the album 'Our World' (2002) which brought together the talents of Yusuf Islam, Khalid Belrhouzi, Qatrunada, Hasan Kilicitan and also introduced his son Rasheed Bhikha. Talib al-Habib - Songs of Innocence Album
'Songs of Innocence' is a collection of eight original English-language songs from Talib al-Habib, a student of the sacred sciences and Medical Doctor. Its subject matter has been aptly described as, 'love of Allah, love of his Prophet, love of teacher, love of family, and love of mankind.' Adapted from a series of poems composed over ten years, they were set to music in a six month period following Ramadhan 1425, in response to the encouragement of several nasheed artists. Talib drew on his childhood experiences of choral singing in arranging the songs, and utilised the daff for percussion after consultation with recognised scholars of traditional Islam.
